Cristiano Ronaldo: 3 Traits You Should Steal From Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo. Love him or hate him. Respect him.

If you’re a Barcelona or Lionel Messi fan – I understand you’re “dislike” for him (and don’t worry I will do an analysis on him next).

However, take a step back from being a football fan and focus only on being a footballer. If you are concerned with becoming the best player you can be, analyzing Cristiano Ronaldo’s qualities is something that will benefit you massively.

In this post…

I am going to explain some standout attributes of Ronaldo’s game and mentality which I would encourage you to add to your own. I’m also going to share a compilation video I want you to watch to subconsciously improve your game. And finally, I want you to watch a short documentary that gives a deeper look into what it takes to become a 4 time Ballon D’or Winner.

We could spend days analyzing this great player.

But…

To keep things short and give you some valuable points you can add to your game right away I’ve highlighted 3 key ideas I want you to understand, watch, and apply to your own game.

1. Directness of Dribbling / Play.

If you’ve watched Ronaldo progress over the years, you will notice a dramatic difference in his play. When he first came to Manchester United, he was a frustrating player to watch. Blessed with incredible talent and obvious potential, he was more concerned with humiliating defenders than creating chances or scoring goals.

He would overcomplicate the play, take too many touches, and attempt to beat the same player multiple times. Nowadays, his approach is very different and not only has his overall play improved but his personal statistics have significantly increased.

He still has the step-overs, flicks, and cuts. But now there is purpose to his movement. He will use his skills to get an inch of space so he can take a shot, put a cross into the box, or move the ball to an open teammate.

He no longer wants to dance on the sideline.
Instead, he wants to cut inside quickly and create something.

Productivity vs. Flash

This is a topic I address a lot in my blog posts and videos because it’s one I’ve personally battled with (and I know millions of young players are going through at this exact moment).

Your skills mean nothing!
If they do not help you produce!

So…

Yes! I encourage you to develop your skills, be creative when you play, and have the confidence to try things with the ball at your feet.

BUT… there must be purpose to your movement!

Be honest and analyze your play:

Are you slowing down the play?
Are you losing possession too often?
Are you dribbling but going no where?

I want you to add productive dribbling to your game:

Get up the field when you dribble.
Dribble with purpose, directness, and go towards goal.
Make one skill move and quickly get past (or away from) the defender.
Create with your skills (chances, assists, goals, productivity).

2. Obsession with Goals.

To say Ronaldo is passionate about his goals would be an understatement.

You can see this in the way he gets frustrated when he misses chances or isn’t passed the ball in goalscoring opportunities. You can see it in the way he celebrates every goal he scores.

It means something to him.
It means everything to him.

This obsession with goal scoring is a trait of all great strikers / goal scorers. It’s also a trait I want you to possess.

If Ronaldo plays and doesn’t score. He is NOT satisfied. Even if the team wins and he plays well  but he doesn’t score… he will look at it as a personal failure.

He will not let this failure defeat him. He will use this failure as motivation to improve. He will be anxious for the next game to come so he can get his goal. Or the next training session to come so he can improve his finishing and composure in front of net. This obsession with goal scoring constantly forces him to analyze his play and improve his game.

He needs to score every time he is on the field.
And for that reason, he usually does.
He loves the feeling and experience of scoring goals.
He is addicted. He is obsessed.

Are you obsessed with scoring?
How do you feel if you don’t score?

Meh…
Whatever….
Oh well…
Maybe next time…

Two different mindsets, create two different results.

I want you to have this passion, addiction, obsession for that feeling of scoring goals. Because when you do… you will massively increase your likeliness of scoring.

You are going to be more likely to:

– make forward runs even when you’re tired
– take your shots when the opportunity comes
– keep trying even after you’ve missed
– do whatever it takes to score

I’m NOT telling you to stay frustrated if you don’t score, feel sorry for yourself, and get upset with your teammates when they don’t pass you the ball.

I understand… not everyone plays striker.
And in the match defenders, will not have as many chances as forwards.

But I want you to become a little more obsessed with scoring goals.

If you’re nervous about your next game / practice you might benefit from the “prematch success guide” – 10 principles to eliminate nerves and improve the quality of your game day performances.

To put this idea into practice:

1) Make the most out of training.

During practices with your team or individually, focus on filling the net with as many goals as possible. Make the most of every opportunity to practice your goal scoring.

Imagine how many goals Ronaldo scores in practice every day. Probably hundreds? Different types of shooting drills, finishing from crosses, scoring in scrimmages, taking free kicks after practice? He probably scores at least 100 goals everyday.

How many goals do you score in practice? 10? 5? 1? 0?
How do these habits translate to your “goal scoring” on game day?

2) Assess your production over the season.

Print out the schedule for your season. Put it on your wall or fridge. Somewhere you are going to see it everyday. Track your goals (and assists – we are focused on overall productivity) for each game. This is going to do a few things.

First, you will see your upcoming games and opportunities to score. This SHOULD motivate you to do everything possible to practice and prepare for these opportunities.

Second, as you track your results you will get encourage by your performances or you will see if you missed out on valuable opportunities or under-performed.

These “failures” SHOULD motivate you to analyze your game, practice more, and make the most of the next opportunity.

3. Confidence.

We cannot talk about Cristiano Ronaldo without addressing his most powerful asset.

His mind and specifically his confidence.

Ronaldo has always believed in himself and he would never have reached the levels of success he has without this mindset.

The mind allows the body to reach it’s full potential.

Without a strong mindset and true confidence…
You will NEVER make it to the level you truly desire.

If you are struggle with confidence and want to succeed / become your best.
Address this issue immediately.

First, you must understand confidence.

Confidence is a skill. It’s something you can develop with practice. Most people think you are born with confidence or it’s a natural ability. The truth is, confidence is a learned skill.

Most players don’t understand this. They believe you are either born with confidence or you are not. This is an extremely limiting belief because it gives you no control over your confidence.

If you want to improve your ball control, you don’t sit and cry about your lack of ball control, you do something about it.

Your confidence should be treated the same way. You don’t sit and cry about your lack of confidence. You do something about it. And when you start to do something about it, that is when you posses the power to improve.

Research confidence.
Study confidence.
Practice confidence.

Here are a few things we can say about Ronaldo’s confidence:

1. He has always believed in his ability to improve.

Ronaldo has never hid his desire to become the best in the world. In order to achieve this, he knew he had to improve and more importantly he knew he was capable of improving.

Regardless of your current level, believe in your ability to make yourself a better player through study, self-analysis, and consistent practice.

2. He has always believed in his ability to perform.

Cristiano Ronaldo thrives under pressure. He wants to be the player to score goal, finish the difficult chance in the 90th minute, or score the final penalty to lit the trophy. Most players hide from these situations because they are afraid of failing.

Your desire to succeed MUST be stronger than your fear of failing. Believe in your ability to perform under pressure. Constantly, tell yourself “I can do this” and “I perform better under pressure”. It makes me focuses more.

3. He has never been negatively effected by the opinions of others.

Cristiano Ronaldo may be the best player in the world but he also takes more criticism than any player in the world. He has his haters. He will be criticized harshly if he under-performs. People want to see him fail.

Does this effect him? Yes! In a positive way. He uses the opinions of others to become even better. He uses it as motivation to improve and become even better.

If you are negatively effected by the opinions of others, that is your fault! Not theirs. People will always be negative. They will want to bring you down especially when you start to succeed.

If this effects you, this is your fault for being mentally weak. You cannot control them. You can only control yourself. Never let other people effect you negatively. Use them as motivation to become even better.

Cristiano Ronaldo Conclusion…

Add these 3 Cristiano Ronaldo Traits to your game immediately;

1) Directness of dribbling / play.

It’s good to have skills, flash, and creativity. But there must be productivity on the end of these skills. Dribble with purpose and directness. Get up the field, move the ball quickly, go towards goal, beat players without hesitation. Do not slow the play. Create with your skills.

2) Obsession with goal scoring.

Find a way to score every time you step on the field. This will not always happen (especially if you are playing on the defensive side of the field). However, it will happen more often if you adopt this mentality and obsession with goal scoring. Find a way to get your goal.

3) Confidence. Confidence. Confidence.

It’s not something you are born with. It’s a skill you develop with understanding and practice. You are responsible for the way you think. Don’t let other people effect you negatively. Always believe in your ability to perform under pressure.

Tell yourself: “I can do this”.

And…

Always believe in your ability to get better (if you do what’s necessary: self-analysis, study, and practice).

Now…

If you’d like to learn even more from Cristiano Ronaldo’s journey to greatness, I encourage you to watch this short documentary about his rise from the streets of Portugal to the top of world football:

Relentless: Cristiano Ronaldo Documentary

There are many valuable ideas / points you can take from this video but let’s highlight a few:

1. First to arrive. Last to leave.

Ronaldo did not become one of the greatest players of all time because of his natural talent. There are millions players around the world with talent who amount to nothing.

He created his legacy through hard work. First to arrive to training. Last to leave. Always making the most of every opportunity to improve.

2. Daily focus on improvement.

Since a young boy he’s been focused on daily improvement. Every day he must become better to reach his goals. And once he did reach the top, it didn’t stop.

He is constantly reinventing his game to stay on top. You cannot be as consistent as Ronaldo by staying the same. You are either moving forwards or backwards, there is no staying still. Improve everyday.

3. Focus on fitness.

We see the skills and the goals but you cannot overlook the fitness of this player. He always makes sure he is sharp, quick, and physically fit to play.

The reason he can score the goals and make the plays is because he has the fitness to do so. Would he be the best player in the world? The best goal scorer in world? If he wasn’t possibly the physically fittest player in the world?

Whether you hate or love Ronaldo…

Hopefully you’ve used him today to make yourself a better player.

About The Author

If you don’t know about me…

I used to be a soccer player who struggled with self-confidence. I felt slow, weak, and unmotivated. My coaches didn’t pay much attention to me, my friends laughed at my lack of skills. At one point, I even became so discouraged that I quit the sport altogether.

Enough was enough. I decided to take control of my own development and set out on a journey to become a better soccer player. This path led me on an incredible journey of self-improvement.

I went on to win league and goal-scoring titles, earn awards, lift trophies, and received a college scholarship. I’ve even earned international caps for my country.

I started sharing my knowledge with others and teaching them how to become the best soccer players they could be. My YouTube channel grew to over 500,000 subscribers.

In addition, I coached for several youth clubs in my local city, and even started my own soccer training company. I went on to coach the most prestigious men’s club in my city for several years.
