Here are a few ways to maximize your training at home:

#1 – Create a space. Find an area in your home where you can always train without bothering other people, getting distracted, or having to set up (if you use equipment). Perhaps you can find a small space in your basement, backyard, or even your room.

#2 – Have a plan. Don’t waste time when you are training. Your goal is to become a better player and in order to achieve this goal, you need to have a plan. What are you going to do each day to become a better player? What are the drills? How many repetitions? How long are you going to train for?

#3 – Quality over quantity. I would much rather you do 10 minutes of at-home soccer training everyday. Instead of 1 hour of at-home soccer training once per week. Your training should be short, high intensity, and motivate you to come back for more. Don’t get lazy and don’t burn yourself out.

#4 – Consistency. Most players will get motivated, train for a few days then fall off. The best players are habitual with their training. It doesn’t matter if you’re tired, cold, busy, or whatever other excuse you want to make up. Be consistent in your training. Find a way to fit it into your schedule. This is how you start to make progress.

Although this article (video below) is about at home soccer training – do NOT use this as a  substitute for your team sessions, matches, and playing with friends.

At home training routines like these will give you an advantage over your competition but there is no substitute for match experience.

Make sure you are still playing with friends, training with teammates, and getting lots of games under your belt. Individual training will help you improve faster but we all know players with great skill who don’t perform well in matches.

There is also no substitute for training on grass with cleats.

Use your at home training as a tool to keep your skills sharp, improve when other players take days off, and get more consistency into your training. But don’t use it to replace these other important methods for development.
