In this tutorial I’ll give you an example of an individual soccer training session plan. More importantly I’ll teach you how to create individual sessions that actually turn you into a better player on game day.

Individual soccer training is extremely important for your personal development and long-term success in soccer. If you are relying on team practices & matches to improve you will never develop at the rate you desire.
In a team session, you are competing with 20 other players for time on the ball and attention from the coach. Team sessions are extremely important. There is no substitute for match experience but if you want to improve on a deeper level…

Let’s look at how we can maximize your individual soccer training sessions. You want to get better results out of less time.
Most players, complain that they practice on their own but don’t get any better. If we analyze how they practice, it makes perfect sense. Just because you practice soccer doesn’t mean you are going to improve.

Full Soccer Training Session
A good individual soccer training session has several characteristics:
#1 – Develops all areas of your game. Most players only practice the skills they are good at. If you want to be a top level player you need to eliminate weaknesses and enhance strengths. Your session needs to give time to technical skills and physical fitness.
#2 – Pushes you out of your comfort zone. If your training is easy, the game is going to be hard. Most players barely break a sweat during their individual training sessions. You want to ensure the types of drills, duration, and intensity – are all pushing you to do a little more than you did last time.
#3 – Is effective but not overwhelming. Although we want to challenge ourselves to grow. Our training sessions can’t push us to the point of total exhaustion. Obviously, you still have your team practices and matches BUT you also want to be able to complete another individual training session tomorrow.
Over time you’ll learn to strike the balance between hard yet effective training. Your training session should evolve overtime.
I’ll give you some examples but you must develop the skill to design your own session plans.
Individual Soccer Training Plan
When creating an individual training program for soccer it’s important to consider all areas of your technical and physical development. Here are a few categories of training you will want to incorporate when creating a full soccer training session for yourself:
#1 – Warm Up – imagine if you actually gained something from your warm up? Most players waste their time during warm ups. Actual focus on improving your mobility, warming up your muscles, and preventing injury.
#2 – Speed – I would recommend focusing on speed training at the beginning of your sessions. The last thing you want to do is blow a hamstring by practicing full out sprints at the end of your session when you’re already fatigued.
#3 – Stamina – You could do this at the end of your session but most players are likely to skip this portion of training, if they are already feeling tired. Do the hard work in the beginning. Get it done. Then you can move onto your technical skills.

#5 – Passing & First Touch – If you really want to improve your passing & first touch but don’t have a partner, utilize a wall. Check out some of these solo passing drills I’ve shared in the past – How To Practice Passing By Yourself
#6 – Shooting – Most players will spend hours practicing free kicks but maybe get 1-2 opportunities to take a freekick in a match. It’s better to spend the majority of your time practicing match realistic shooting techniques (off the dribble, after a move, out of the air, etc)
#7 – Cool Down – imagine if you actually gained something from your warm up? Most players waste their time during cool downs. Actual focus on improving your flexibility, releasing tension in your muscles, and preparing for tomorrow’s individual soccer training session.
Individual Soccer Training Schedule
Scheduling your individual soccer training program depends on your personal goals, availability, and current skill level. Here are a few tips to help you schedule your training program effectively:
- Create a schedule: Plan your training program in advance and schedule it into your weekly routine. This will help you stay organized and ensure that you are dedicating enough time to your training.
- Be consistent: Consistency is key to making progress and achieving your goals. Make sure to stick to your schedule as much as possible, and avoid missing or rescheduling training sessions.
- Gradually increase the intensity and volume: Gradually increase the intensity and volume of your training to avoid injury and burnout. This will also help you progress and achieve your goals more efficiently.
- Allow for rest and recovery: Include rest and recovery in your schedule, this will ensure that your body has time to recover and repair itself after training.
- Reflect on your progress: Reflect on your progress regularly and make adjustments to your schedule if necessary. This will help you stay on track and achieve your goals more efficiently.
