How To Juggle A Soccer Ball 100 Times
Many people will say that juggling is a waste of time and it doesn’t translate into better performances on the soccer field. I would disagree. Here’s why:
Spending all of your time practicing how to juggle a soccer ball will not make you a better player but it will help you develop the technical skills (specifically ball control) required to become a better player.
Learning how to juggle a soccer ball is extremely important but it is just the beginning of your development as a soccer ball. If you can learn how to juggle a soccer ball this will give you the foundation to go onto improve other areas of your technical skills.
Also, when you learn the basics of juggling a soccer ball you’ll be able to advance into more difficult soccer juggling exercises that actually will help you with your in-game control and replicate first touches you will encounter during a match.
Those techniques are for a different article. Today we will simply be focusing on how to juggle a soccer ball with your feet (alternate touches – left, right, left, right).
How Do You Juggle A Soccer Ball?
Put your frustrations aside. They won’t help you here. Mistakes are good, they are opportunities to gain information and try again. You can master this skill but it actually starts with your mindset and not your technique.
Don’t allow yourself to get frustrated. Realize that making mistakes and struggling is part of the process. When you fail, try again. The only way you will not figure out how to juggle a ball in soccer is if you give up.
Make a commitment to yourself: DO NOT GIVE UP!
You don’t have to be perfect today. You don’t have to juggle 100 times by tomorrow. All you have to do is be better than you were yesterday. I always challenge my players to beat their juggling record by at least 1 everyday.
You’ll often surprise yourself and beat your juggling record by 10, 20, 50, and even more. Once you understand the basic technique, get your rhythm, and practice for a few days in a row – large leaps in you juggling record will happen consistently.
Best Way To Learn How To Juggle A Soccer Ball
Most players say they want to improve their ball control skills and learn how to juggle a soccer ball but if you analyze the amount of time they spend trying to master this soccer skill it’s no reason why they are not getting any better.
Never underestimate the basic fact that in order to improve you need to spend more time with the ball. If you spent 10 minutes per day trying to improve your soccer juggling skills, in 7 days you would have invested 70 minutes.
If you invest 70 minutes into anything in 1 week, you’re going to get better. The best way to learn how to juggle a soccer ball is by going by yourself, with a ball, and trying to keep it up as many times as you can. You must be your own best teacher.
You need to learn from your mistakes, make adjustments to your technique, and figure out how to do this for yourself. Obviously, you can find information online and get advice from other players but the way we learn is by doing.
Practice juggling a soccer ball for 10 minutes per day, everyday this week and watch what happens.
Tips On How To Juggle A Soccer Ball
I’ll go into more detail about soccer juggling technique with the video below but take these ideas into consideration when you are practicing juggling by yourself:
#1 – Backspin. Focus on creating good backspin with every touch. Most players will juggle with bent knees and they are picking the ball up without spin. Make contact at a lower point, hitting on the underside of the ball, creating backspin so the ball stays in one trajectory and doesn’t get away from. You’ll see what I mean in the video below.
#2 – Rhythm. Anticipate that the ball is coming from your left to your right foot. Most players react. They make a touch, then move their leg and body to adapt to wherever the ball goes. Anticipate that the ball is already coming to your opposing side, stay in nice rhythm. When you can catch a good rhythm you’ll be amazed at how much better your juggling will be.
#3 – Comparison. You may find that one foot produces better touches that the other. It’s your job to analyze why that is happening. What is different about your technique on your right side compared to your left side? What adjustments do you need to make so your touches are even on both sides. Compare your strong and weak foot. Keep practicing.
#4 – Stay ready. Everyone is focused on the quality of your touches but what about the quality of your movement. Stay on your toes, alert, and ready to react. If you are juggling flat footed you will never be able to get to bad touches. Focus on what you are doing with you body. Get your body over the ball, stay on those toes, and react to bad touches quickly.
#5 – Don’t give up. Just because your touch isn’t perfect doesn’t mean you need to drop the ball. Most players give up on bad touches when they could usually get to the ball. No matter where the ball goes, don’t give up on it. Do anything you can to keep the ball off the ground. You’ll surprise yourself how often you can keep the ball alive, when usually you would have let it die. The more effort you put into keeping the ball up, the faster your juggling will improve.
Soccer Juggling Struggles
Even with all of these ideas and motivation, you may still find yourself struggling with frustration after making mistakes. This is normal.
However, you don’t want to be a normal player. You want to be a top level player and elite soccer players do not let their frustration get the better of them. Instead, they channel that energy into their training.
This is the same for losing matches, getting cut from teams, and making big mistakes during matches. You can either let those situations discourage you. Or you can channel that frustration into motivation to get better.
If you want to improve your juggling skills, you must first master the battle in your own mind. Most players, don’t want to admit this but when you acknowledge that your thoughts must be positive in order to improve, you’ll be way ahead of the game.
How To Juggle In Soccer STEP BY STEP
If you’re ever struggle to get past a certain record, keep making the same mistakes, or just cant seem to get any better at juggling – refer to this image because it may spark some helpful ideas.
Do not be the type of player who says:
“I’ve tried that and it doesn’t work for me.”
This is the mindset of a loser. If these techniques work for countless other players, they will work for you. Just be open to the idea that you may be doing something wrong, you still have more to learn, and definitely need more practice.
The better we get at soccer, the more we see how much we can improve. The pro player notices so many weaknesses in his game we wants to fix. He’s more motivated to train than ever. The beginner cannot see their own flaws because they don’t yet have enough experience.
