If you are ONLY relying on your team to become a better soccer player, you are cheating yourself. This season, make a commitment to develop a powerful individual soccer training plan.

Practicing soccer by yourself can become your biggest advantage over teammates and opponents. Most players don’t know how to train on their own. Or they lack the discipline to practice by themselves.

That which they are not willing to do, is what will make you better than them.

Now you shouldn’t worry about comparing yourself to other players. Use them as benchmarks. Take them as motivation. Let them fuel your motivation to improve. But at the end of the day, the only player you need to be better than is the one you were yesterday.

Many players do practice alone but their style of training is inefficient. They never push themselves into a state of discomfort and they focus on soccer drills & skills that don’t actually make them more effective during matches.

You want to be the type of player who gets more benefit from 10 minutes of training, than most players do in 1 hour. Put intention into your training. Everything you do should be for a purpose. Everything you do, should be done with quality & intensity.

The way you practice is the way you play. If you put focus, effort, and intensity into your individual training. This will translate into your games.

If your individual training is easy, the game is going to be hard. If your individual training is hard, the game is going to be easy.

How To Plan Soccer Training Sessions

I believe in creating complete soccer players. Eliminating weakness and enhancing your strengths. In order to do this, you must have a well rounded individual soccer training session plan.

Here’s an individual soccer training session outline:

#1 – Warm up. The purpose of warm up is to prepare the body for training and reduce the chance of injury. However, most players waste their time with warm ups. This is an incredible opportunity to improve your mobility, coordination, balance, and overall athleticism.

#2 – Speed & Stamina. It’s best to do the hardest part of training first. Get it out of the way. I would recommend doing your speed work and stamina training before you move into technical skills. Quality over quantity. It’s better to do less repetitions at higher intensity.

#3 – Technical Skills. Develop every part of your technique. Spend time improving your ball control, dribbling, passing, first touch, and shooting. The quality of your time invested is more important than the quantity. Analyze your mistakes. Make adjustments to your technique. Always practice with both feet.

#4 – Cool Down. Players who take care of their body have longer careers, improve faster, and can train harder the next day. Don’t just go through the motions. Can you improve your flexibility with some cool down stretches? Also use this time to improve your mentality. Talk to yourself positively and be proud of your work ethic.

It’s easy to be motivated after reading this article (or watching the video below). You might take this information and do some individual soccer training for a couple days. But at some point your motivation is going to disappear.

The best players can self-motivate but more importantly they are disciplined. Discipline means doing what you know you should do, even if you don’t feel like doing it. You can either make excuses or make things happen.

Can you create consistency in your individual soccer training schedule?

Remember, the days you don’t want to train are the most important days to train. This develops the mental toughness needed to push through excuses. Mentality is the biggest separator from those players who make it and those who don’t.

Disciplined consistency with your individual soccer training is what will take you to the next level. Identify the moments when you are feeling mentally weak, tired, and unmotivated. That is your opportunity for growth. Talk yourself forward!
