Footballers with exceptional ball control always stand out.
Not only do these players separate themselves from every other player on the pitch with their noticeable individual skill but they are often able to be more effective with their play.
How To Practice Soccer For Beginners
First of all please understand the difference between team training and individual soccer practice. Both are very important for your development but here are the benefits of practicing soccer by yourself.
- You get more time on the ball. Instead of standing in line waiting for other players to complete the drill, you get 100% of the touches when you practice soccer by yourself.
- Time to analyze your mistakes. In practices and games we don’t have time to review our mistakes and fix them immediately. When we practice soccer by yourself we can take a step back and practice the same skill again and again until we get it right.
- Your confidence will increase because you can start to see improvements in basic skills in less time.
Now that we understand why it’s important to practice soccer alone and at home.
The real question is:
How To Improve Your Soccer Skills Faster
How To Practice Soccer Alone
It’s not rocket science.
Improving any technical soccer skill quickly follows the same process:
- Get more repetitions. The more you practice a skill, the better it gets. This is an obvious statement but many players want improvement without putting in the practice.
- Analyze those repetitions. To improve faster, in the same amount of time. Analyze each repetition. Learn from mistakes. Adjust technique and practice with the intention of “getting better” not “getting tired”.
- Be consistent with your training. It’s more valuable to practice 10 minutes everyday, than 1 hour once per week. Most players give up before the results come. Be consistent and you will see progress.
Let’s take a closer look at:
- Which soccer ball control drills to use.
- How to use ball control effectively in games.
- And mentality tips that will help you improve faster.
How To Practice Soccer At Home
In the video above – I’ve demonstrated several different soccer drills to practice soccer for beginners:
- Basic juggling.
- Dribbling and turning skills.
- Wall passing.
- 1v1 soccer dribbling skills.
- Shooting soccer drills.
- Soccer fitness & conditioning drills.
- Strength and balance exercises.
- Warm up exercsies.
- Cool down soccer routines.
- And much more…
The specific soccer drills that you use to practice alone are important. But how you choose to do these drills can have the biggest impact on how quickly your soccer skills improve.
Here are few key ideas to focus on when performing these ball control soccer drills:
- Use both feet. Don’t wait until. you’ve played soccer for 10 years to start practicing with your weaker foot. Start training your ball control drills and all soccer drills with both feet, from the beginning. One day in the future, you will be very happy you made this decision.
- Track your progress. Especially if you’re a beginner. Count your consecutive juggles. Set a record. Attempt to beat that record on a daily basis. When you track your results, you know if you’re actually improving and it will motivate you to practice your soccer ball control exercises more often.
- Don’t get frustrated. A strong mentality is the fastest way to progression. When you make mistakes, do not allow yourself to get frustrated. Instead, learn from your mistakes .Take that information and practice again. Keeping a level head is the key to faster progress.
How To Practice Soccer Skills
I’ve given you a few ideas about how to practice soccer by yourself l but which soccer drills are best for youth soccer players / footballers?
In my opinion…
There are two exercises that younger players should start with. These are the best ball control drills for youth soccer players:
- Fast footwork exercises. Young players need more touches on the ball. Any exercise where they can get lots of quick touches in a short period of time without complex movement is best.
- Basic juggling (with feet). Ideally you want to use your feet as much as possible. Alternating left, right. However, the goal of this soccer ball control drill is to do whatever you can to keep the ball off the ground.
Start basic. Set a record. And work to improve that record by at least 1 each day. Don’t worry about the juggling records of other players. Feel good about yourself as long as you are improving.
But seriously.

If you don’t know about me…
I used to be a soccer player who struggled with self-confidence. I felt slow, weak, and unmotivated. My coaches didn’t pay much attention to me, my friends laughed at my lack of skills. At one point, I even became so discouraged that I quit the sport altogether.
Enough was enough. I decided to take control of my own development and set out on a journey to become a better soccer player. This path led me on an incredible journey of self-improvement.
I went on to win league and goal-scoring titles, earn awards, lift trophies, and received a college scholarship. I’ve even earned international caps for my country.
I started sharing my knowledge with others and teaching them how to become the best soccer players they could be. My YouTube channel grew to over 500,000 subscribers.
In addition, I coached for several youth clubs in my local city, and even started my own soccer training company. I went on to coach the most prestigious men’s club in my city for several years.
