Soccer Drills With 2 Players

If you are searching for good soccer drills for two players, you’ve come to the right place.

Partner training can be extremely beneficial, when done properly. Sadly, most players waste time when they train with friends. They spend too much time talking, goofing around, and using ineffective soccer drills that don’t make you perform better in matches.

Training with a partner is great when you both have a positive mindset, want to get better, and are willing to put in the work. Pick your trainer partners wisely 😉

In this article / video below I’ll show you some of the best soccer drills with two players.

Training with another player is valuable because it creates more match-realistic scenarios. You can’t play at your own pace.  You must adapt to the movement and creativity of another player.

Also, when you train by yourself you don’t always push yourself hard enough. We will often work harder when someone else is watching. This shouldn’t be the case but it is the truth. Training with another player will often force you to work harder, do more, and play faster.

*However, we should all make a commitment to push ourselves harder on our own. What you do when no one is watching, will determine how you perform when everyone is watching.*

If you are going to train with a partner, be sure to find someone who has a similar mindset and goals as you. You want your partner to push you up to a higher level. Not pull you down..

To create the best environment it’s important that you act as a leader. Through your communication and work rate. Lead by example.

If you are extremely positive and uplifting, it will encourage your partner to do the same. Praise good work, motivate when necessary, and lift people up when they are feeling down.

We’ve all played in an environment when everyone was negative. Coaches / teammates would blame, complain, and look for excuses. They would motivate you with threats and disappointment. This is NOT a healthy environment to be in. It doesn’t promote self-belief.

We play our best when our teammates are supportive and encouraging. Two player soccer drills are a great place to work on your leadership & teamwork skills. Do your best to improve the mentality & confidence of your training partner. This is what leadership is all about.

Good Soccer Drills For 2 Players

In the video below I’ll show you some good soccer drills for 2 players to improve ball control, footwork, and confidence. Small space soccer drills like this are a great place to start because they allow for lots of touches in a short period of time.

Once you become comfortable with basic 2 player soccer drills like these you can move into more advanced partner drills such as:

– ball control (demonstrated below)
– short & long passing
1v1 attacking & defending
shooting & finishing drills

However, you should never overlook the basics.

One of the biggest mistakes I see young players make is thinking that more advanced drills will help them improve faster. The professionals practice the basics. They master the basics. Great players do the simple things extremely well.

Here are a few helpful ideas to think about when performing the partner drills below. These will ensure you get a bigger return on the time you invest:

#1 – Be active. Everyone thinks about the technique of their feet. However, it’s extremely important to think about the technique of your movement. Get off your toes. Stay on your toes. Ready in an athletic stance. Focus on the way you plant your toes, push off the ground. If you can start to long at movement the same way you do technique, your game will transform overnight.

#2 – React quickly. The best players have quick reactions. Even more so, they anticipate where the ball is going to be before it gets there. Reacting quickly is about movement (as discussed above) but it’s also about focus. Approach every soccer drill with the intention of giving your best performance. The way you practice is the way you play.

#3 – Push the pace. Once you understand the drill and build a basic rhythm, start to increase the speed. If your training is easy, the game will be hard. Challenge yourself to always play faster and faster. If you are NOT making mistakes every so often, you’re probably not going fast enough. When you have this mindset, technical soccer drills also become fitness training.

#4 – Learn from your mistakes. It’s okay to make mistakes, this is part of learning. Mistakes are opportunities for growth. Don’t get frustrated. Analyze what you did wrong. Make adjustments and practice until you get it right.

#5 – Learn from each other. Take advantage of your partner’s presence. Do they perform certain soccer skills better than you? What can you learn from them? When they make mistakes can you identify what they did incorrectly?

Learning from your own mistakes will help you improve fast.
Learning from the mistakes of others will help you improve faster.

The wall is the best substitute for a training partner because it never gets tired, always passes the ball back to you, and is always available to train. However, that is a topic for another day.

I’ve made a little cheat sheet to remember the different 2 player soccer drills demonstrated in the video below. All of these drills will help you improve your footwork, first touch, and ball control.

Do not be the type of player who says:

“I’ve tried that and it doesn’t work for me.”

This is the mindset of a loser. If these techniques work for countless other players, they will work for you. Just be open to the idea that you may be doing something wrong, you still have more to learn, and definitely need more practice.

The better we get at soccer, the more we see how much we can improve. The pro player notices so many weaknesses in his game we wants to fix. He’s more motivated to train than ever. The beginner cannot see their own flaws because they don’t yet have enough experience.

About The Author

If you don’t know about me…

I used to be a soccer player who struggled with self-confidence. I felt slow, weak, and unmotivated. My coaches didn’t pay much attention to me, my friends laughed at my lack of skills. At one point, I even became so discouraged that I quit the sport altogether.

Enough was enough. I decided to take control of my own development and set out on a journey to become a better soccer player. This path led me on an incredible journey of self-improvement.

I went on to win league and goal-scoring titles, earn awards, lift trophies, and received a college scholarship. I’ve even earned international caps for my country.

I started sharing my knowledge with others and teaching them how to become the best soccer players they could be. My YouTube channel grew to over 500,000 subscribers.

In addition, I coached for several youth clubs in my local city, and even started my own soccer training company. I went on to coach the most prestigious men’s club in my city for several years.
